Seether’s fourth studio album “Holding Onto Strings Better Left to Fray” is a very interesting record which, while seems to be quite different from its predecessors, keeps the essence present along all their previous works.

Instead of Seether’s tradicional “angry-heavy-like” sound, the songs are softer and some of them quite audacious. That includes the single “Country Song” – the name explains the influence by itself, the ballad “Pass Slowly” (has anyone ever listened Seether using strings before?) and the rusty and catchy “Roses”. Brendan O’Brien’s non-polished production also helps us to feel like listening something very different from before.

“But if everything is different where is the essence of the band then?”- you may ask. The answer is simple: on details. We have some heavy tracks like “Fur Cue”, “No Resolution” and “Desire for Need”, and also songs that remind us the band’s previous hits. “Here and Now” has the same atmosphere of “Rise Above This”, “Master of Disaster” has sad lyrics and depressing melodies like “The Gift” and the guitars riffs of “Forsaken” reminds “Driven Under” directly.

“Holding Onto Strings Better Left to Fray” is a balance between Seether’s old sound and a brand new musical direction. Some may think this is the band’s best album to date and some may not, but certainly this is a solid effort that will please the old fans and has the potential to conquer many new ones.

O quarto álbum de estúdio do Seether, “Holding Onto Strings Better Left to Fray”, é um trabalho muito interessante que, ao mesmo tempo em que parece ser bastante diferente de seus antecessores, mantém a essência que esteve presente durante todos os discos da banda.

Ao invés do tradicional “peso raivoso Seether”, temos aqui músicas mais leves, e algumas delas bastante audaciosas. Como exemplos temos o single “Country Song” – com influências já explicadas no próprio nome, a balada “Pass Slowly” (alguém já ouviu o Seether usando arranjos orquestrados antes?) e a rústica e empolgante “Roses”. A produção pouco polida de Brendan O’Brien também ajuda a criar a sensação de estarmos ouvindo algo muito diferente de antes.

“Mas se está tudo diferente, onde está a essência da banda então?” – você pode perguntar. A resposta é simples: nos detalhes. Temos algumas faixas pesadas como “Fur Cue”, “No Resolution” e “Desire for Need”, e também músicas que nos remetem a hits consagrados da banda. “Here and Now” tem a mesma atmosfera de “Rise Above This”, “Master of Disaster” tem letra depressiva e um ritmo triste como “The Gift”, e as guitarras de “Forsaken” nos fazem lembrar instintivamente de “Driven Under”.

“Holding Onto Strings Better Left to Fray” equilibra muito bem a essência do Seether com uma nova proposta sonora. Alguns podem achar este o melhor trabalho da banda e outros não, mas é certo que este é um trabalho sólido que agradará massivamente seus fãs antigos e tem potencial para conquistar muitos novos.
