These Times

SafetySuit’s sophomore release ‘These Times’ can be defined as a perfect successor for a perfect debut album. The band’s first effort ‘Life Left to Go’ is simply stellar and drew attention everywhere, so if they keeped following the same path it would be inevitable to the band to make an album that wouldn’t reach its predecessor. Knowing it, the boys were smart and decided to change the direction of their sound into something more pop-oriented, and that makes us feel like listening to SafetySuit for the first time. And believe when I say: listening to SafetySuit for the first time is an unforgetable and passionate experience.

The album starts with the fantastic “Believe“, the track that most reminds us from their debut. The guitar solo baseline from Dave Garofalo plus Doug Brown’s powerful voice – his best performance to date -, makes the listener feel himself (or herself) at home. Little changes also on “Get Around This“, the album’s first single and a natural choice after the success of “Stay“. Then everything begins to change in “Let Go“, where the band shows that they’re not afraid of risking. With synthesized vocals and pop-infused beats, this track shocks the ones who expected an album like ‘Life Left to Go’. “Staring At It” is kind of a lighter version of “Let Go”, and then we come to the album’s highest point: “These Times“. This is certainly one of the band’s best ballads to date (better than “Stay”? Absolutely) and it’s positive message (Now I’m sitting alone here in my bed / I’m waiting for an answer I don’t know that I’ll get / I cannot stand to look in the mirror, I’m failing / I’m telling you these times are hard / But they will pass) is something that many fans will rely on and find a little comfort with. Thereafter the band travels through several influences, like a certain U2 side on “Crash” and a surprising folk-country on “Things to Say“. The closing track “Life In The Pain” is another impressive one: guitar effects echoes on the acoustic guitar’s background along with delicate piano notes, giving support to the whispers of Doug Brown, who stands out again.

What seemed impossible just happened: following different paths, SafetySuit made another masterpiece on ‘These Times’. An incredible achievement from these newcomers that looks like veterans. The world needs more bands like SafetySuit and, if there’s justice in here, they’ll write their names on music history one day.

‘These Times’, segundo álbum do SafetySuit, pode ser definido como um sucessor perfeito para um álbum de estreia perfeito. O primeiro trabalho da banda, ‘Life Left to Go’, é simplesmente impecável e chamou atenção por todos cantos, então se seguisse o mesmo caminho era inevitável que a banda fizesse um álbum mais fraco e que pouco se destacaria. Sabendo disso, os rapazes foram espertos e resolveram mudar a direção de seu som para algo mais pop, o que faz com que tenhamos a sensação de estarmos ouvindo o SafetySuit pela primeira vez. E acredite quando digo: ouvir SafetySuit pela primeira vez é uma experiência apaixonante e inesquecível.

O álbum começa com a incrível “Believe”, faixa que mais lembra o trabalho anterior. Os riffs solados do guitarrista Dave Garofalo, somados com o vocal poderoso de Doug Brown – que consegue mostrar sua melhor forma até hoje nesta faixa -, fazem o ouvinte se sentir em casa. Pouco muda também em “Get Around This”, primeiro single do álbum e uma escolha natural após o sucesso conquistado por “Stay”. Eis que então tudo começa a mudar em “Let Go”, onde a banda mostra que não tem medo de se arriscar. Com efeitos sintetizados de voz e batidas pop, a faixa chega a causar um choque em quem esperava um álbum similar a ‘Life Left to Go’. “Staring At It” é uma espécie de versão mais leve de “Let Go”, e então chegamos ao grande destaque do álbum: “These Times”. Esta é certamente uma das melhores baladas já feitas pela banda (melhor que “Stay”? Pode apostar que sim), e sua mensagem positiva (Now I’m sitting alone here in my bed / I’m waiting for an answer I don’t know that I’ll get / I cannot stand to look in the mirror, I’m failing / I’m telling you these times are hard / But they will pass) é algo com que muitos fãs irão se identificar e achar um pouco de conforto. Daí por diante a banda viaja por diversas influências, como um certo lado U2 em “Crash” e um folk-country surpreendente em “Things to Say”. A faixa de encerramento “Life In the Pain” é um show à parte: efeitos de guitarra ecoam ao fundo do violão e das notas delicadas de piano, dando suporte aos sussurros de Doug Brown, que impressiona mais uma vez.

O que parecia impossível acabou acontecendo: trilhando caminhos diferentes, o SafetySuit fez uma nova obra-prima com ‘These Times’, um feito incrível destes novatos que parecem veteranos. O mundo precisa de mais bandas como o SafetySuit e, caso haja justiça, eles gravarão seus nomes na história da música um dia.
