Thick as Thieves

Cavo created large expectations for their major sophomore release ‘Thick as Thieves’. Not because they reached #1 on charts with “Champagne“, but because since their unsigned times the band does great albums full of exciting riffs, catchy choruses and crafted melodies that, together, result on remarkable songs. Cavo’s main quality was always that: the remarkable songs, and that’s what make this band so special. A quality, unfortunately, that somehow got lost on ‘Thick as Thieves’.

The album starts with the kick-ass title track “Thick as Thieves“, one of their best songs to date. Remarkable just like the way described above, its chorus is so striking that one listen is enough to stick it on your head. The second single “Celebrity” is another highlight, where the bassist Brian Smith shows how good musician he is. “Hold Your Ground” is also good, but sounds like it was cropped to be more commercially viable and a little of the song’s luster got lost in the process.

However, besides the mentioned tracks, the rest of the album it’s not exactly remarkable. It’s not bad also, but the tracks are so generic that you unconsciously start to pay attention to other things and leave the album playing on background, and that’s a little disappointing from a band that made so many remarkable songs.

‘Thick as Thieves’ is a fine soundtrack for your everyday life: a pleasurable radio-friendly album good for listen while working or driving. For most of bands that’s perfectly fine, but for a special and talented band like Cavo it’s a little bitter and disappointing.

A expectativa para o novo álbum do Cavo, ‘Thick as Thieves’, era grande. Não pelo fato de terem conquistado o topo das paradas com seu single “Champagne”, mas porque desde sua época independente a banda faz álbuns excelentes cheios de riffs empolgantes, refrões cativantes e melodias trabalhadas que, somadas, transformam-se em músicas marcantes. A característica principal do Cavo sempre foi esta, as músicas marcantes, e era isso que tornava a banda tão especial. Porém, infelizmente, esta característica acabou se perdendo em ‘Thick as Thieves’.

O álbum começa de forma espetacular com a faixa-título “Thick as Thieves”, uma das melhores músicas já feitas pela banda. Ela empolga exatamente da forma que descrevi acima, e o refrão é tão marcante que basta ouvi-lo uma única vez para não sair mais da sua cabeça. “Celebrity”, segundo single, é outro dos grandes pontos altos do disco, onde o baixista Brian Smith se destaca e mostra quão bom instrumentista é. “Hold Your Ground” é boa, mas passa a sensação de que foi editada para ser mais comercialmente viável e isto acaba por tirar um pouco de seu brilho.

Porém, salvo as faixas citadas, o resto do álbum simplesmente não empolga. Não que seja ruim, mas as faixas são tão genéricas que aos poucos você começa a prestar atenção em outras coisas e deixa o álbum rolando de fundo, algo decepcionante para uma banda que tinha como característica suas músicas marcantes.

‘Thick as Thieves’ é uma ótima trilha sonora para o seu dia-a-dia: um álbum amigável e bem feito para você deixar rolando enquanto trabalha ou dirige seu carro. Para a maioria das bandas estaria de ótimo tamanho, mas por se tratar de uma banda tão especial e talentosa como o Cavo, no final o que fica é um gosto amargo de decepção.
