Augustana’s self-titled third album marks a new era for the band. Since their latest work ‘Can’t Love, Can’t Hurt’ it’s perceptible that they were leaving the alternative pop-rock behind and trying out new sound directions. Here these changes are clearly notable. Few of the band that conquered the charts with their hit “Boston” in 2005 are found here: instead we have more a indie-like sound, with many voices effects and influences like The Killers and Kings of Leon.

Among the most experimental tracks we have “Steal Your Heart”, “Wrong Side of Love” and “Just Stay Here Tonight” (impossible not to remind The Killers here), but in “Counting Stars” and “Borrowed Time” we can still listen a bit of old Augustana. The album highlight is “Hurricane”, where the band tries a sort of indie-country that almost sounds like gospel. It’s an extremely audacious track, but is simply wonderful.

‘Augustana’ is not necessarily better or worse than their previous albums, it’s just different. But it’s not so easy to digest and such changes may not be easily accepted between fans. It’s impossible to predict how this album will be received, but the courage of experimenting so much is respectable and this album is worth listening a few times before any judgments.

O terceiro álbum do Augustana representa uma nova era para a banda. Desde seu último trabalho, ‘Can’t Love, Can’t Hurt’, já era perceptível que estavam deixando o pop-rock alternativo para trás e experimentando novas direções sonoras, e aqui esta mudança ficou clara e evidente. Pouco se vê daquela banda que conquistou as paradas com seu hit “Boston” em 2005: ao invés disso temos uma sonoridade muito mais voltada ao indie, com abuso nos efeitos de voz e influências de bandas como The Killers e Kings of Leon.

Entre as faixas mais experimentais temos “Steal Your Heart”, “Wrong Side of Love” e “Just Stay Here Tonight” (impossível não se lembrar de The Killers aqui), entretanto em “Counting Stars” e “Borrowed Time” podemos ouvir ainda um pouco do velho Augustana. O grande destaque do disco fica por conta de “Hurricane”, onde a banda arrisca uma espécie de indie-country que chega a beirar o gospel. É uma faixa extremamente ousada, porém simplesmente maravilhosa.

A sonoridade de ‘Augustana’ não é necessariamente melhor ou pior que a dos álbuns anteriores: é simplesmente diferente. Porém ele não é tão fácil de digerir e tamanha mudança pode causar certa dificuldade de aceitação junto aos fãs. É impossível prever como este álbum será recebido, mas a coragem da banda em experimentar tanto é respeitável e este disco merece ser ouvido com calma antes de qualquer julgamento.
